WIZARDING SCHOOLS AROUND THE WORLD: JAPAN

In a secluded area of Mount Hiei, shrouded in mist, the Japanese Institute for Magical Practices spirals gracefully into the sky. The school is a series of elegant pagodas built to impossible heights with a multitude of connecting bridges crisscrossing like a bird’s nest. On the ground is an elaborate garden with a sprinkling of ponds. A kaleidoscope of fish zigzag through the water, sometimes even taking to the air like birds due to rather peculiar abilities gained over time through overexposure to magic. Students often take immense pleasure in enchanting a cherry blossom downpour to trail people who have wronged them; the charm usually remains intact for well over a week unless a teacher takes pity upon the student and dispels the spell. While they have mastered wandless magic through the use of talismans, pockets of the Japanese wizarding community have slowly begun to adopt the use of wands following its rise in popularity all over the world, although wandless magic still takes precedence, and wands are more often tucked behind their ears or used to hold up their hair than to practice magic.

Ravenclaw is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw. Members of this house are characterised by their wit, learning, and wisdom. Its house colours are blue and bronze, and its symbol is a eagle. The house ghost, who in life was the daughter of the house’s founder Rowena Ravenclaw, is the Grey Lady. Ravenclaw roughly corresponds with the element of air; the House colours blue and bronze were chosen to represent the sky and eagle feathers respectively, both having much to do with air.

“I’m afraid I’ll never finish college. I’m afraid I’ll finish college with student loans I can never pay back. I’m afraid I’ll get a degree and won’t be able to find a job in that field. I’m afraid I’ll get a degree, get the job I dreamed of, and hate it.”

Daryl takes care of the Grimes family.

Daryl’s stance towards children has changed so much.  He was horrible towards Sophia when she was scared in that nursing home.  He seemed to consider Carl a nuisance in one part of season 2, as he told Carl “Why don’t you go find your old man?  Pester him instead?”  Then during “Beside the Dying Fire” when Lori announced in panic that she couldn’t find Carl (when the herd appeared), he immediately turned to her, exclaiming “What?!!”

In season 3, when Rick went emotionally and mentally awol, Daryl was looking out for Carl.  First he pulled Beth aside and asked her to keep an eye on Carl while he was going on the run for formula.  Then he held Judith and fed her, asking Carl if she had a name yet.  When Carl went through the names, Daryl was sad himself (particularly when Carl mentioned Sophia and Carol) but then, seeing Carl’s sadness, he tried to cheer Carl (and everyone else) up by calling her “little ass-kicker.”  Then in “Hounded,” Daryl opens up to Carl about how he lost his mother when he was young, trying to empathize with him.  Before going to retrieve Glenn and Maggie, Daryl tells Carl that he’ll keep on eye on his father for him.

In season 4 when the infection breaks out in cell block D, the first thing that Daryl is concerned about (and Carol too) is getting children to safety.  Later on in season 4, after what happened with the claimers, Daryl comes to Rick with a wet handkerchief so that he [Rick] can wipe the blood off his face.  Rick tells him to save the water for drinking, but Daryl’s rationale is that it’s important to wipe off the blood so that Carl doesn’t see it.  It’s also interesting how as Michonne, Rick, Daryl, and Carl are walking to Terminus, Daryl is in the back with Carl.  He looks back at him a few times and stays level with him in the back while Rick and Michonne are talking.  Interesting that Rick himself wasn’t standing back there with his own son (who had nearly been raped the night before) but Daryl was.
